Why Knowing Your Neighbors Matters

What makes a place truly feel like home?

For most of us, it's not just the house—it's the people around us.

Yet nearly one-third of Americans don't know a single neighbor by name. That's surprising, especially since research has found that people with strong neighborhood relationships tend to be healthier, happier, and more connected. Some studies have even linked knowing your neighbors with a lower risk of heart attack and stroke.

So why have we become less neighborly?

There isn't one simple answer. We move more often, work longer hours, spend more time online, and live in neighborhoods where it's easy to drive into the garage and never see another person. Many people are also hesitant to approach neighbors because of concerns about privacy, safety, or simply not wanting to intrude.

The encouraging news is that communities can reconnect.

It often starts with something simple—a neighborhood gathering, a shared outdoor space, welcoming a new resident, or just stopping to chat while walking the dog. Small moments create familiarity, and familiarity often grows into friendship.

One of the things I've learned? When people become even a little emotionally invested in where they live, they naturally take better care of it. And when neighbors know one another, our community becomes friendlier, safer, and more resilient.

In an emergency, your neighbors are your first network of support. Long before outside help arrives, it is often the people living closest to you who are there to lend a hand. The stronger our connections today, the better prepared we'll be if tomorrow brings unexpected challenges. That's one of the reasons we're creating more opportunities to gather as neighbors. Building community isn't about organizing events for the sake of having events—it's about creating friendships, strengthening trust, and making Spyglass Ridge an even better place to call home.
